The First Time is a visual meditation on time, memory, and the shifting boundaries of self. Inspired by Sam Harris’s The Last Time You’ll Do Something meditation and shaped by the nearly simultaneous birth of Porter’s first child and the death of her father, the piece explores how experience mirrors itself at the thresholds of life and death. But by collapsing linear time into a single moment of awareness, it positions the artist - and by extension the viewer - as a quiet observer, ultimately gesturing toward a deeper understanding of consciousness as the ground upon which all experience arises and dissolves.
